When an election is called in Canada, a writ of election is drawn up for every constituency across the country, instructing the local returning officer to hold an election. When the election is over, the writ is returned with the name of the successful candidate.

Without the writ, there’s no election.

The Writ

The Writ is about elections in Canada, from byelections taking place in the smallest provincial ridings to national campaigns that can re-shape the course of history.

It’s written by me, Éric Grenier. I’ve been writing about electoral politics since 2008, when I launched the website ThreeHundredEight.com. I’ve written for publications like The Globe and Mail, The Huffington Post Canada and The Hill Times, and I was a senior writer and the CBC’s polls analyst working out of its parliamentary bureau in Ottawa from 2014 to 2021.

Over my career, I’ve covered dozens of elections across Canada. At The Writ, I’m going to cover dozens more.

Why subscribe?

Your subscription supports the work I’m doing and gives you exclusive access to the following:

  • Every Wednesday morning, the Weekly Writ gets you up to date on all the latest election news and political polls. The Weekly Writ also includes an estimate of how many seats each party would win both federally and in every provincial legislature If the Election Were Held Today, a profile of a riding that will be hotly contested in an upcoming vote and a new installment of the #EveryElectionProject, my attempt to chronicle the history of every election and leadership race in Canadian history.

  • The Grenier Political Report, where I bring together electoral precedent, public opinion polls, fundraising and political geography to rate upcoming elections according to a simple grade: likely, lean or toss.

  • Political analyses that take a deep dive into political trends, important issues and electoral geography. The frequency of these analyses can vary, but there are usually two or three published every month.

  • Weekly bonus episodes of The Writ Podcast during major election campaigns, in addition to the freely available Friday episodes of the podcast.

  • Participation in the discussion threads, annual prediction contests and the subscribers-only Writ Chat.
