I think byelections generally become about 1st vs. 2nd, and the NDP isn't 1st or 2nd in a lot of ridings. And when they are, it is about a major party vs. a minor party, in terms of the role in the House. I think it is just tough to motivate an NDP voter, particularly as they are disproportionately younger, to go out and support the NDP in byelections.

I haven't looked at the numbers recently, but I think they usually have a tough time.
